Glory be to you, purifier of the world—victorious celestial Ganga!
Adorned in Shiva’s matted hair, your sacred waves surge sky‑high.
जय जय जननी हराना अघखानी, आनंद करनी गंगा महारानी॥
Jai jai jananī harānā aghkhānī, ānand karanī Gangā Mahārānī.
Victory to the Mother who dispels sin—doing bliss, O Great Queen Ganga!
जय भगीरथी सुरसरि माता, कलिमल मूल डालिनी विख्याता॥
Jai Bhagirathī sursarī mātā, kalimal mūl ḍālinī vikhyātā.
Hail Bhagirathi, mother of sacred rivers, renowned for erasing kalimal’s roots.
जय जय जहानु सुता अघ हनानी, भीष्म की माता जगा जननी॥
Jai jai Jahānu jutā aghhanānī, Bhīṣhm kī mātā jag jānanī.
Hail Jahnavi’s daughter who slays sins—the world‑mother and Bhishma’s nurturer.
धवल कमल दल मम तनु सजे, लखी शत शरद चन्द्र छवि लजाई॥
Dhaval kamal dal mam tanu saje, lakhī śat śarad chandra chhavi lajaī.
With white lotus flowers adorning me, your autumn‑moon visage fills me with awe.
वहां मकर विमल शुची सोहें, अमिया कलश कर लखी मन मोहें॥
Vahām makar vimal śuchi sohe, amīya kalaś kar lakhī man mohe.
On the Makara, your pristine waters delight—like nectar in pot, captivating minds.
जदिता रत्ना कंचन आभूषण, हिय मणि हर, हरानितम दूषण॥
Jaditā ratnā kanchan ābhūṣhaṇ, hiy maṇi har, harāṇitam dūṣhaṇ.
Jeweled like gems and gold ornaments—stealing hearts, breaking evil’s hold.
जग पावनी त्रय ताप नासवनी, तरल तरंग तुंग मन भावनी॥
Jag pāvanī tray tāp nāsavānī, taral tarang tung man bhāvānī.
You purify the world, destroy the threefold sufferings, your flowing waves elevate the spirit.
जो गणपति अति पूज्य प्रधान, इहुँ ते प्रथम गंगा स्नाना॥
Jo Gaṇapati ati pūjya pradhān, ihum te pratham Gangā snānā.
Ganapati, the most revered deity, the first bath was taken in you, O Ganga.
ब्रह्मा कमण्डल वासिनी देवी, श्री प्रभु पद पंकज सुख सेवि॥
Brahmā kaṃṇḍala vāsini devī, śrī prabhu pad paṃkaj sukh sevi.
Mother Ganga resides in Brahma’s water pot—serving the lotus feet of the Lord brings bliss.
साठी सहस्र सागर सुत तरयो, गंगा सागर तीर्थ धरयो॥
Sāṭhī sahasra sāgar sut taryo, Gangā sāgar tīrtha dharyo.
Sixty thousand ocean‑sons bathed in Ganga—you created holy spots at the ocean banks.
अगम तरंग उठ्यो मन भवन, लखी तीर्थ हरिद्वार सुहावन॥
Agam taraṅg uṭhyo man bhavan, lakhī tīrtha Haridvār suhavān.
The rare waves have arisen—Haridwar’s peaceful ghats became marvels.
तीर्थ राज प्रयाग अक्षैवेता, धरयो मातु पुनि काशी करवत॥
tīrth rāj Prayāg Akṣhaivetā, dharyo māt lab too Kāsī Karvat.*
Mother created Prayag—the King of Pilgrimages—and then formed sacred Kashi at the eastern bend.
धनी धनी सुरसरि स्वर्ग की सीधी, तरनी अमिता पितु पंक पिरही॥
Dhanī dhanī surasari svarag kī sīdhī, taranī amitā pitu paṅk pirahi.
Blessed is the stairway to heaven via the divine river—crossing it with faith draws immense merits.
भागीरथी ताप कियो उपारा, दियो ब्रह्म तव सुरसरि धारा॥
Bhāgīrathī taap kīyo upārā, diyo Bramha tav surṣari dhārā.
Bhagiratha endured great penance—you granted the Ganga to flow from heaven.
जब जग जननी चल्यो हहराई, शम्भु जाता महँ रह्यो समाई॥
Jab jag jananī calyo haharāī, shambhu jāta mahan rahoṃ samāī.
When you began to descend, O world‑mother, you embraced Shiva in his hair’s embrace.
वर्षा पर्यंत गंगा महारानी, रहीं शम्भू के जाता भुलानी॥
Varṣhā paryaṃt Gangā Mahārānī, rahiṃ Shambhu ke jātā bhulānī.
Let the rains continue until the end of time—you never let Shiva forget.
पुनि भागीरथी शम्भुहीं ध्यायो, तब इक बूँद जटा से पायो॥
Puni Bhāgīrathī Shambhu hīṃ dhyāyo, tab ik būnd jaṭā se pāyō.
When Bhagirathi meditated on Shiva, just a single drop was caught in his hair.
ताते मातु भें त्रय धारा, मृत्यु लोक, नाभा, अरु पातारा॥
Tāte mātu bhẽ tray dhārā, mrityu lok, nābhā, aru pāratarā.
Mother, you flow in three unseen currents—through realms of death, navel, and beyond heaven.
गईं पाताल प्रभावती नाम, मन्दाकिनी गई गगन ललामा॥
Gaiṅ pātāla prabhāvatī nām, Mandākinī gai gagan lalāmā.
Patalavati (one of your forms) flows invisibly; Mandakini flows across the sky.
मृत्यु लोक जाह्नवी सुहावनी, कलिमल हरनी अगम जग पावनि॥
Mrityu lok sāhnivi Suhavani, kalimal harani agam jag pāvani.
Jahnavi, beautifying the world of the dead, removes impurities in ways unseen.
धनि मइया तब महिमा भारी।धर्म धुरी कलि कलुष कुठारी॥
Dhani Maiya tab mahima bhaari, dharm dhuri kali kalush kuthaari.
Blessed Mother, your glory is supreme; you uphold dharma and cut through Kali Yuga’s evils.
मातु प्रभवति धनि मंदाकिनी।धनि सुरसरि सकल भयनाशिनी॥
Maatu Prabhavati dhani Mandaakini, dhani Sursari sakal bhay naashini.
O Prabhavati! O Mandakini! O divine river! You destroy all fears and bless all beings.
पन करत निर्मल गंगा जल।पावत मन इच्छित अनंत फल॥
Pan karat nirmal Ganga jal, paavat man ichchhit anant phal.
By drinking or touching Ganga's pure water, one attains infinite desired results.
पुरव जन्म पुण्य जब जागत।तबहीं ध्यान गंगा महं लागत॥
Purav janm punya jab jaagat, tabhiṁ dhyaan Ganga mahan laagat.
When past-life virtues awaken, only then does one begin meditating upon Mother Ganga.
जई पगु सुरसरी हेतु उठावही।तई जगि अश्वमेघ फल पावही॥
Jai pag Sursari hetu uṭhaavahi, tai jagi Ashwamedh phal paavahi.
One who takes even a step toward Ganga attains merits equal to a hundred horse sacrifices.
महा पतित जिन कहू न तारे।तिन तारे इक नाम तिहारे॥
Maha patit jin kahu na taare, tin taare ik naam tihāre.
Even those whom no other power can redeem, your one name redeems them instantly.
शत योजन हूं से जो ध्यावहिं।निशचाई विष्णु लोक पद पावहीं॥
Shat yojan hoon se jo dhyaavahiṁ, nischāī Vishnu lok pad paavahiṁ.
Those who remember you from even a hundred yojanas afar surely reach the abode of Vishnu.
नाम भजत अगणित अघ नाशै।विमल ज्ञान बल बुद्धि प्रकाशे॥
Naam bhajat aganit agh naashai, vimal gyaan bal buddhi prakaashai.
Chanting your name destroys countless sins and ignites pure knowledge, strength, and intellect.
जिमी धन मूल धर्म अरु दाना।धर्म मूल गंगाजल पाना॥
Jimi dhan mool dharm aru daanaa, dharm mool Gangājal pānā.
Just as wealth is the root of charity, Ganga water is the root of all religious merit.
तब गुन गुणन करत दुख भाजत।गृह गृह सम्पति सुमति विराजत॥
Tab gun gunan karat dukh bhājat, grih grih sampatti sumati virājat.
By singing your glories, sorrow flees; homes are blessed with wealth and good sense.
गंगहि नेम सहित नित ध्यावत।दुर्जनहूं सज्जन पद पावत॥
Gangahi nem sahit nit dhyāvat, durjanahūṁ sajjan pad pāvat.
One who regularly meditates on Ganga with discipline transforms from wicked to virtuous.
उद्दिहिन विद्या बल पावै।रोगी रोग मुक्त हवे जावै॥
Uddihin vidyā bal pāvai, rogi rog mukt have jaavai.
The ignorant gain knowledge and strength; the diseased become free from ailments.
गंगा गंगा जो नर कहहीं।भूखा नंगा कभुहु न रहहि॥
Gangā Gangā jo nar kahahiṁ, bhūkhā nangā kabhuhu na rahahiṁ.
Who chants “Ganga, Ganga” never stays hungry or deprived.
निकसत ही मुख गंगा माई।श्रवण दाबी यम चलहिं पराई॥
Nikasat hi mukh Gangā māī, shravan dābī Yam calahiṁ parāī.
At the mere utterance of your name from the mouth, Yamraj’s messengers run away.
महं अघिन अधमन कहं तारे।भए नरका के बंद किवारें॥
Mahan aghin adhaman kaham tāre, bhaye narkā ke band kivāre.
You save the most fallen sinners and close the gates of hell for them.
जो नर जपी गंग शत नामा।सकल सिद्धि पूरण ह्वै कामा॥
Jo nar japi Gang shat nāmā, sakal siddhi pūran hvai kāmā.
He who chants “Ganga” a hundred times gains all siddhis and fulfillment of desires.
सब सुख भोग परम पद पावहीं।आवागमन रहित ह्वै जावहीं॥
Sab sukh bhog param pad pāvahiṁ, āvāgaman rahit hvai jāvahiṁ.
He enjoys all worldly pleasures and attains liberation beyond birth and death.
धनि मइया सुरसरि सुख दैनि।धनि धनि तीरथ राज त्रिवेणी॥
Dhani Maiyā Sursari sukh daini, dhani dhani tīrath rāj Triveni.
O Divine Mother Ganga, giver of joy—blessed is the sacred confluence at Triveni.
ककरा ग्राम ऋषि दुर्वासा।सुन्दरदास गंगा कर दासा॥
Kakrā grām ṛiṣi Durvāsā, Sundardās Gangā kar dāsā.
At Kakra village, Sage Durvasa stayed, and devotee Sundardas served Mother Ganga.
जो यह पढ़े गंगा चालीसा।मिली भक्ति अविरल वागीसा॥
Jo yah paḍhe Gangā Chālīsā, milī bhakti aviral Vāgīsā.
One who recites this Ganga Chalisa receives uninterrupted devotion and divine wisdom.
नित नए सुख सम्पति लहैं, धरें गंगा का ध्यान।
अंत समाई सुरपुर बसल, सदर बैठी विमान॥
Nit naye sukh sampatti lahain, dhareṁ Ganga kā dhyān.
Ant samāī Surpur basal, sadar baithī vimān.
He who meditates on Ganga daily gains new joys and wealth, and at life’s end ascends to heaven in a divine chariot.
संवत भूत नभ्दिशी, राम जन्म दिन चैत्र।
पूरण चालीसा किया, हरी भक्तन हित नेत्र॥
Sanvat bhūt nabdishi, Rām janm din Chaitra.
Pūran Chālīsā kiyā, Hari bhaktan hit netra.
This Chalisa was completed on Lord Rama’s birth date, in Chaitra month, for the welfare of all devotees.
