Introduction

श्री माँ सरस्वती चालीसा

॥ दोहा (प्रारंभ) ॥

जनक जननि पद कमल रज, निज मस्तक पर धारि।
बन्दौं मातु सरस्वती, बुद्धि बल दे दातारि॥
Janak janani pad kamal raj, nij mastak par dhaari.
Bandau maatu Saraswati, buddhi bal de daataari.
(I bow to Mother Saraswati, placing the dust of your lotus feet upon my head—grant me wisdom and strength.)

पूर्ण जगत में व्याप्त तव, महिमा अमित अनंतु।
रामसागर के पाप को, मातु तुही अब हन्तु॥
Poorn jagat mein vyaapt tav, mahima amit anant.
Raam-sāgar ke pāp ko, mātu tuhi ab hantu.
(Your glory pervades the entire universe; O Mother, now destroy the sins of the ocean of Ram’s devotees.)

चौपाइयाँ 

जय श्री सकल बुद्धि बलरासी, जय सर्वज्ञ अमर अविनासी॥
Jai Shri sakal buddhi-bal-raasi, jai sarvagya amar avinaasi.
(Hail to you, source of all intellect and strength; omniscient, eternal, indestructible.)

जय जय जय वीणाकारधारी, करती सदा सुहंस सवारी॥
Jai jai jai veenākār dhāri, karti sadā suhaṃs savārī.
(Hail, hail, hail! You who hold the veena, riding forever on the graceful swan.)

रूप चतुर्भुजधारी माता, सकल विश्व अंदर विख्याता॥
Rūp chaturbhuj-dhāri māta, sakal viśva andar vikhyātā.
(Mother with four arms, renowned throughout the world.)

जग में पाप बुद्धि जब होती, तबहि धर्म की फीकी ज्योति॥
Jag mein pāp-buddhi jab hoti, tabahi dharm ki fīkī jyoti.
(When worldly intellect turns sinful, and justice dims.)

तबहिं मातु ले निज अवतारा, पाप हीन करती महि तारा॥
Tabahi mātu le nij avataarā, pāp-hīn karti mahi tārā.
(Then you incarnate to cleanse the world and destroy sins.)

बाल्मीकि जी थे भ्रम ज्ञानी, तव प्रसाद जानै संसार॥
Bālmīki jī the bhram-gyānī, tav prasād jānai sansār.
(Valmiki, once ignorant, became learned and his fame spread through your grace.)

रामायण जो रचे बनाई, आदि कवि की पदवी पाई॥
Rāmāyaṇa jo rache banāī, ādi kavi kī padvī pāī.
(He composed the Ramayana and earned the title of the first poet.)

कालिदास जो भये विख्याता, तेरी कृपा दृष्टि से माता॥
Kālidās jo bhaye vikhyātā, terī kripā drṣti se māta.
(Kalidasa too became famous through your benevolent glance.)

तुलसी सूर आदि विद्वाना, भये और जो ज्ञानी नाना॥
Tulsī Sūr ādi vidvānā, bhaye aur jo gyānī nānā.
(Tulsidas, Surdas, and many other scholars attained wisdom.)

तिन्हहिं न और रहे अवलम्बा, केवल कृपा आपकी अंबा॥
Tinhaḥ na aur rahe avalambā, keval kripā āpki Ambā.
(They relied solely on your grace, no one else.)

करहु कृपा सोइ मातु भवानी, दुखित दीन निज दासहि जानी॥
Karahu kripā soi mātu Bhavānī, dukhit-dīn nij dāṣi jānī.
(O Mother Bhavani, shower your grace—we are your needy and humble servants.)

पुत्र करै अपराध बहुता, तेहि न धरहिं चित सुन्दर माता॥
Putra karai aparādh bahutā, tehi na dharahīn chit sundaṛ māta.
(When my sons commit great sins, do not forsake me, O beautiful Mother.)

राखु लाज जननी अब मेरी, विनय करूं बहु भांति घनेरी॥
Rākhu lāj jananī ab merī, vinay karūn bahu bhānti ghanerī.
(Mother, preserve my honor—I bow deeply in many ways.)

मैं अनाथ तेरी अवलंबा, कृपा करउ जय जय जगदम्बा॥
Main anāth terī avalambā, kripā karau jai jai Jagadambā.
(I am your helpless child—send grace, victory to Mother of the Universe.)

मधु कैटभ जो अति बलवाना, बाहुयुद्ध विष्णु से ठाना॥
Madhu Kaitabh jo ati balvānā, bāhuyuddha Viṣhṇu se thānā.
(Madhu and Kaitabha were extremely powerful and challenged Vishnu in battle.)

समर हजार पांच में घोरा, फिर भी मुख उनसे न हो मोरा॥
Samar hazār pānch mein ghorā, phir bhi mukh unse na ho morā.
(Even in a fierce one-thousand-and-five battle, they could not defeat him.)

मातु सहाय भई तेहि काला, बुद्धि विपरीत करी खलहाला॥
Mātu sahāy bhai tehi kālā, buddhi viparīt karī khalhālā.
(Mother intervened at that moment and foiled their evil scheme.)

तेहि ते मृत्यु भई खल केरी, पुरवहु मातु मनोरथ मेरी॥
Tehi te mrityu bhī khal kheri, puravahu mātu manorath merī.
(They perished immediately—Mother, fulfill my heartfelt desires.)

चंड मुण्ड जो थे विख्याता, छण महुँ संहारेउ तेहि माता॥
Chand-muṇḍ jo the vikhyātā, chaṇ mahuṃ sanhāreu tehi māta.
(Mother, you instantly destroyed the notorious demons Chanda and Munda.)

रक्तबीज से समरथ पापी, सुर मुनि हृदय धरा सब कांपी॥
Raktbīj se samarath pāpī, sur-muni hṛday dharā sab kāṃpī.
(That sinful Raktabija was so powerful, gods and sages trembled.)

काटेउ सिर जिम कदली खम्बा, बार बार बिनवउँ जगदम्बा॥
Kāṭe’u sir jim kadalī khambā, bār-bār binavauṃ Jagadambā.
(You beheaded him with a single stroke—again and again I pray to you.)

जगत प्रसिद्ध जो शुम्भ निशुंभा, छिन में बधे ताहि तू अम्बा॥
Jagat prasiddh jo Shumbh Nishumbhā, chin meṃ bādhe tāhi tū Ambā.
(You instantly bound Shumbh and Nishumbh, whom the world knew.)

भरत मातु बुधि फेरेउ जाई, रामचंद्र वनवास कराई॥
Bharat mātu buddhi fere’u jāī, Rāma-chandra vanvās karāī.
(Mother, you guided Bharat’s wisdom and caused Ram’s exile.)

एहि विधि रावण वध तुम कीन्हा, सुर नर मुनि सब कहुं सुख दीन्हा॥
Ehi vidhi Rāvaṇ vadh tum kīnhā, sur-nar-muni sab kahuṃ sukh dīnhā.
(In this way, you killed Ravana and gave happiness to gods, humans, and sages.)

को समरथ तव यश गुण गाना, निगम अनादि अनंत बखाना॥
Ko samarath tav yash guṇ gānā, nigam anādi anant bakhānā.
(Who is capable of singing your endless glories?)—Canons themselves are too small.)

विष्णु रूद्र अज सकहिं न मारी, जिनकी हो तुम रक्षाकारी॥
Viṣṇu Rudra aj sakahīṃ na mārī, jinki ho tum rakṣākārī.
(Even Vishnu, Rudra, Brahma cannot destroy—whom you protect.)

रक्त दन्तिका और शताक्षी, नाम अपार है दानव भक्षी॥
Rakta Dantikā aur Shatākṣhī, nām apār hai dānav bhakṣhī.
(You, Dantika and Shatakshi, have form devouring demons—your name is boundless.)

दुर्गम काज धरा पर कीन्हा, दुर्गा नाम सकल जग लीन्हा॥
Durgam kāj dharā par kīnhā, Durgā nām sakal jag līnhā.
(You accomplished great deeds on Earth—your name as Durga is embraced by all.)

दुर्ग आदि हरनी तू माता, कृपा करहु जब‑जब सुखदाता॥
Durga ādi haranī tū māta, kripā karahu jab‑jab sukh-dātā.
(O Mother who vanquishes even Durga, bless all repeatedly.)

नृप कोपित जो मारन चाहै, कानन में घेरे मृग नाहै॥
Nrip kopit jo māran chāhe, kānan meṃ ghere mṛg nāhī.
(If a king wants to kill in rage, not even a deer is safe in forest.)

सागर मध्य पोत के भंगे, अति तूफान नहीं कोऊ संगे॥
Sāgar madhya pot ke bhaṅge, ati tūfān nahīn kou sange.
(If his ship is wrecked at sea, no storm can trouble his companion.)

भूत प्रेत बाधा या दुःख में, हो दरिद्र अथवा संकट में॥
Bhūt pret bādhā yā dukh mein, ho daridr athavā saṅkaṭ mein.
(In ghostly obstruction, sorrow, poverty, or trouble.)

नाम जपे मंगल सब होई, संशय इसमें करइ न कोई॥
Nāma jape maṅgal sab hoī, saṃshay ismeṃ karai na koī.
(Chant her name and all becomes auspicious—doubt nothing.)

पुत्रहीन जो आतुर भाई, सबै छाँड़ि पूजें एहि माई॥
Putrahīn jo ātur bhāī, sabai chāḍi pūjen ehi māī.
(Those longing for children worship this Mother.)

करै पाठ नित्य यह चालीसा, होय पुत्र सुन्दर गुण ईसा॥
Karai pāṭh nitya yah chālīsā, hoy putra sundar guṇ īsā.
(Recite this daily and gain a virtuous and beautiful son.)

धूपादिक नैवेद्य चढ़ावै, संकट रहित अवश्य हो जावै॥
Dhūpādik naivedya chaḍhāvai, saṅkaṭ rahit avashya ho jāvai.
(Offer incense and food—troubles will surely vanish.)

भक्ति माता की करै हमेशा, निकट न आवै ताहि कलेशा॥
Bhakti māta kī karai hameśhā, nikat na āvai tāhi kaleśā.
(Always have devotion; no trouble will come near.)

बंदी पाठ करें शतबारा, बंदी पाश दूर हो सारा॥
Bandī pāṭh kareṃ śata bārā, bandī pāś dūr ho sārā.
(Recite hundred times—the bondage ropes are removed.)

करहु कृपा भवमुक्ति भवानी, मो कहं दास सदा निज जानी॥
Karahu kripā bhavmukti Bhavānī, mo kahun dās sadā nij jānī.
(O liberating Mother Bhavani, show compassion—may your servant always be yours.)

जय जय जय सरस्वति भवानी, भव कुंज बिहारी भवानी॥
Jai jai jai Sarasvatī Bhavānī, bhav kunj bihārī Bhavānī.
(Hail, hail, hail to you, O Saraswati Bhavani—residing in the garden of worldly life.)

॥ दोहा (समापन) ॥

माता सूरज कान्ति तव, अंधकार मम रूप।
डूबन ते रक्षा करहु, परूं न मैं भव‑कूप॥
Māta sūraj kānti tav, andhakār mām rūp.
Ḍūban te rakṣhā karahu, parūṃ na maiṃ bhav‑kūp.
(Your brilliance is like the Sun—my life is enveloped in darkness. Save me from sinking into the world’s abyss.)

बल बुद्धि विद्या देहुं मोहि, सुनहु सरस्वती मातु।
अधम रामसागरहिं तुम, आश्रय देउ पुनातु॥
Bal buddhi vidyā dehuṃ mohi, sunahu Sarasvatī māt.
Adham Ramsāgarhin tum, āśraya deu punātu.
(Grant me strength, wisdom, and knowledge—O Mother Saraswati. You alone are my refuge through the ocean of life like Ram’s devotees.)
