 Shri Satyanarayan Vrat Katha

Chapter 1

Once upon a time, in the holy land of Naimisharanya, 88,000 great sages and rishis were gathered. They humbly asked Sage Suta, the great storyteller and knower of the Puranas:

“O Suta Maharishi! In this age of Kali Yuga, most people are disconnected from Vedic knowledge and spiritual practices. How can such people attain devotion to God and liberation from suffering? Is there a simple vrat (vow) or tapasya (austerity) that gives great merit and fulfills desires in a short time? Please share such a sacred story with us.”

Hearing their request, Sage Suta replied with joy:

“O noble Vaishnavas, you have asked a question that benefits all beings! I shall now tell you about a powerful and sacred vrat that Sage Narada once asked Lord Vishnu, and Lord Vishnu Himself narrated it to him. Please listen to this story with full attention.”

Suta further said:

“This sacred story brings great happiness in all times. It removes sorrows, ends worldly miseries, and fulfills all desires. In moments of deep trouble, this vrat acts as a shield and support. Without singing the glories and names of the Lord, the sins of Kali Yuga cannot be destroyed.”

 Narada’s Question to Lord Vishnu

Once Sage Narada, who constantly travels to all realms for the welfare of others, came to Earth (Mrityulok). There he saw that humans were suffering due to the consequences of their past actions. Feeling deep compassion, Narada thought,

“What could be done to free these beings from sorrow and pain?”

With this thought, he traveled to Vaikuntha, the divine abode of Lord Vishnu.

There he saw Lord Vishnu, radiant and majestic, with four arms holding a conch (shankha), discus (chakra), mace (gada), and lotus (padma), adorned with a beautiful garland. Narada bowed and praised Him, saying:

“O Lord! You are all-powerful. Even the mind and speech cannot reach You. You have no beginning, middle, or end. You are the cause of all creation and the destroyer of Your devotees' sorrows. I bow to You again and again.”

Hearing these words, Lord Vishnu smiled and asked:

“O great sage Narada! What brings you here? Please tell Me freely what is in your heart.”

Narada then humbly asked:

“O Lord! On Earth, people are taking birth in many forms and suffering immensely due to their past karma. Kindly tell me an easy and effective way through which their sorrows can be removed and they can be uplifted.”

 Lord Vishnu Reveals the Vrat

Lord Vishnu said:

“Narada, your question is truly wonderful and for the benefit of all beings. Let Me tell you about a sacred Vrat (vow) that destroys delusion and grants great merit. This is the Satyanarayan Vrat, the supreme vow. One who performs it with full devotion and proper rituals attains all comforts on Earth and, after death, gains liberation (moksha).”

Hearing this, Narada asked further:

“O Lord! What is the proper way to perform this vrat? What are its benefits? Who has done it before? On which day should it be observed? Please explain everything in detail.”

Lord Vishnu replied:

“Narada, this vrat removes sorrow, grief, and disease. It ensures success everywhere. On any auspicious day, especially in the evening, one should perform this puja along with family and priests with full faith and devotion. Offerings may include bananas, ghee, honey, jaggery or sugar, milk, and wheat flour (or powdered rice if wheat is unavailable). These should be offered to Lord Satyanarayan with love. Feed the brahmins and guests, then take your own meal. Spend the evening singing the glories of Lord Satyanarayan. Whoever performs this vrat with devotion will have all desires fulfilled. Especially in Kali Yuga, this is the easiest and most effective means to gain immense merit with little effort and cost.”

Thus ends Chapter 1 of Shri Satyanarayan Vrat Katha

Shri Satyanarayan Vrat Katha – Chapter 2

Sage Suta continued narrating the story and said:

"O revered sages! Now I will tell you the stories of those who performed the Satyanarayan Vrat in the past and received divine blessings. Please listen carefully."

In the beautiful city of Kashipur, there lived a very poor Brahmin. Constantly suffering from hunger and thirst, he wandered around helplessly. Seeing his devotion and distress, Lord Vishnu appeared before him, disguised as an old Brahmin, and kindly asked:

“O noble Brahmin! Why do you seem so distressed and sad? Please share your pain with me, I am here to help.”

The poor Brahmin replied with folded hands:

“I am poverty-stricken and wander from place to place, begging for alms. If you know any way I can be free from this suffering, kindly tell me.”

The Lord, still in the guise of the old Brahmin, said:

“Worship Lord Satyanarayan with full devotion. This sacred vrat (ritual) is highly beneficial. Performing this puja sincerely fulfills all desires and removes sorrow.”

After explaining the complete procedure of the vrat to the poor man, the Lord disappeared.

The Brahmin was amazed and thought to himself,

“I will definitely observe this sacred vrat as told by the old sage.”

That night he couldn’t sleep out of excitement and hope.

The next morning, he woke up early, went out for alms, and that day, by divine grace, he received more donations than usual. He used that to purchase all the required items for the puja — bananas, ghee, milk, wheat flour, jaggery, honey, and offered them with love to Lord Satyanarayan, along with his family.

As a result of the vrat, the Brahmin's poverty ended, and he became wealthy. From that day forward, he observed the vrat every month. Suta Muni says:

“Whoever performs this vrat with faith and as per scriptural methods, they are freed from all troubles and attain liberation.”

Then the sages asked Suta Muni,

“O wise one! Who else followed this vrat after hearing about it from the Brahmin? Please tell us more.”

Suta Ji continued:

“One day, while the Brahmin was performing the vrat at home, an old woodcutter came by. Carrying a bundle of firewood on his head, tired and thirsty, he saw the ritual taking place. Curious, he entered the house, paid respects to the Brahmin, and asked:
‘O Brahmin! Whose worship are you performing? What benefit does it give? Please tell me.’”

The Brahmin answered:

“This is the worship of Lord Satyanarayan, the fulfiller of all desires. By His grace, my life is now blessed with peace and prosperity.”

The woodcutter was delighted. After drinking the sanctified water (charanamrit) and taking prasadam, he went home.

The very next day, he resolved in his heart:

“With whatever I earn from selling firewood today, I will perform the Satyanarayan Vrat.”

So he went to a rich town with his bundle. That day, to his surprise, the wood fetched four times the usual price. Grateful and overjoyed, he bought all the necessary puja items — bananas, sugar, ghee, milk, yogurt, honey, and wheat flour.

Returning home, he called his relatives and neighbors and performed the Satyanarayan Vrat with devotion. As a result, he became prosperous and lived a content life. After enjoying all the pleasures of the world, he ultimately attained Vaikuntha, the divine abode of Lord Vishnu.

॥ Thus Ends the Second Chapter of Shri Satyanarayan Vrat Katha ॥

Shri Satyanarayan Vrat Katha – Chapter 3

Suta Maharishi continued:

O revered sages, now I will narrate to you the next divine story of Lord Satyanarayan’s glory. Please listen with full attention.

Long ago, there was a noble and learned king named Ulkamukh. He was virtuous, truthful, and had full control over his senses. Every day, he would visit temples and donate generously to the poor and needy. His queen was a righteous and pious woman, as graceful as a lotus.

One day, both husband and wife were performing the Satyanarayan Vrat with full devotion by the banks of the Bhadrasheela River. At that moment, a wealthy merchant named Sadhu arrived with his trade goods. Curious to see the royal couple engaged in the ritual, he approached the king and humbly asked:

“O King, may I know what auspicious ritual you are performing? I wish to learn and understand.”

The king replied kindly:

“Dear merchant, I am performing the Satyanarayan Vrat along with my family to be blessed with a child. This vrat fulfills all desires.”

Hearing this, Sadhu the merchant said with folded hands:

“Please teach me the procedure. I too am childless and wish to perform this vrat.”

The king explained the complete method of the vrat. The merchant returned home joyfully and shared everything with his wife Lilavati. He vowed:

“When we are blessed with a child, I will definitely perform this vrat.”

Soon by the grace of Lord Satyanarayan, his wife conceived, and in the tenth month, gave birth to a beautiful daughter named Kalavati. She grew up gracefully like the waxing moon.

One day, Lilavati reminded her husband gently:

“You had made a vow to perform the vrat when we had a child. Please fulfill it now.”

But Sadhu replied:

“I will surely do the vrat at the time of Kalavati’s wedding.”

With this, he left for business in a distant land.

Later, when he returned, he saw Kalavati playing with her friends. Realizing she had grown up, he sent a messenger in search of a suitable groom. The messenger found a virtuous boy from Kanchan Nagar, and soon the wedding was celebrated grandly.

However, Sadhu forgot to perform the Satyanarayan Vrat at the time of his daughter’s marriage. Displeased, Lord Satyanarayan cursed him to face great sorrow.

After the wedding, Sadhu and his new son-in-law went for trade by ship to a city named Ratnasar, ruled by King Chandraketu. One night, a thief stole from the king’s treasury and, being chased, hid the stolen goods in the merchant’s ship.

In the morning, the king’s guards found the stolen treasure in Sadhu’s ship and, suspecting him and his son-in-law to be thieves, arrested them and brought them before the king. Without listening to their side, the king ordered them to be imprisoned and confiscated all their belongings.

Back home, Lilavati and Kalavati were devastated. Thieves had looted their house, and they were suffering from hunger and grief. One day, Kalavati went to seek food and reached a Brahmin’s home, where she witnessed the Satyanarayan Vrat being performed.

She listened to the katha, received prasadam, and returned home joyfully.

Her mother asked:

“Dear child, where were you for so long? I was so worried.”

Kalavati replied:

“Mother, I saw a beautiful vrat being performed in a Brahmin’s house for Lord Satyanarayan, and I wish to do it too.”

Overjoyed, Lilavati gathered their relatives and performed the Satyanarayan Vrat with full faith. They prayed:

“O Lord! Please forgive our mistakes. May our husband and son-in-law return safely.”

Pleased with their devotion, Lord Satyanarayan appeared in King Chandraketu’s dream and said:

“O King, you have imprisoned two innocent merchants. Release them and return their belongings or face ruin.”

The next morning, the king summoned the prisoners, asked for forgiveness, and freed them. He also returned their wealth twice the amount and honored them with new clothes and gifts.

Thus, Sadhu the merchant and his son-in-law returned home safely and peacefully.

॥ Thus ends Chapter 3 of Shri Satyanarayan Vrat Katha ॥

Shri Satyanarayan Vrat Katha

Suta Ji continued:

O revered sages, now listen carefully as I narrate the fourth part of this sacred tale.

After completing their business, the merchant (Sādhu Vaishya) and his son-in-law began their journey back home. As they proceeded, Lord Satyanarayan Himself took the form of a renunciate (a sanyasi carrying a staff) to test the merchant's humility and devotion.

The Lord, disguised as the sanyasi, approached the merchant and asked:

“O merchant, what do you have in your boat?”

The arrogant merchant laughed and replied mockingly:

“O renunciate! Why do you ask? Are you hoping to get some of it? My boat is filled with only bel leaves.”

Hearing this untruthful answer, Lord Satyanarayan calmly said:

“Let your words be true.”

He then left the spot and went a little ahead to sit quietly near the seashore.

After some time, the merchant returned to his boat after finishing his daily rituals and was stunned to find that all his riches had truly turned into bel leaves. Seeing this, he fainted and collapsed on the ground.

When he regained consciousness, he was grief-stricken and deeply remorseful. Seeing his sorrow, his son-in-law said:

“O father! Please do not despair. This is clearly the result of offending that holy renunciate. Let us go and seek his forgiveness—only he can help us.”

Hearing this, the merchant immediately went to the renunciate (Lord Satyanarayan in disguise), fell at His feet, and with deep devotion and repentance said:

“O Lord! Please forgive me. I spoke untruthfully to you and acted out of pride.”

The Lord then revealed:

“O merchant! It was by My will alone that you suffered these troubles. You turned away from My worship, and therefore I showed you the consequences.”

The humbled merchant said:

“O Lord! Even great gods like Brahma cannot comprehend Your divine play—how could a simple man like me understand? Please forgive my ignorance and accept my worship. Kindly restore the wealth in my boat.”

Hearing these sincere words, Lord Satyanarayan was pleased. He granted the merchant’s wish and vanished from sight.

When the merchant and his son-in-law returned to the boat, they were overjoyed to see it once again filled with riches. With gratitude, they worshipped Lord Satyanarayan there and then continued their journey home.

As they neared their city, the merchant sent a messenger ahead to inform his family. The messenger reached the merchant’s home and greeted his wife, Līlāvatī, saying:

“Your husband and son-in-law are both safe and have returned with great wealth. They are near the city.”

At that time, Līlāvatī and her daughter Kalāvatī were engaged in the worship of Lord Satyanarayan. Hearing the good news, Līlāvatī was overjoyed and said to her daughter:

“You continue the worship and finish offering the prasād (sacred food); I will go to receive your father.”

However, Kalāvatī, eager to see her husband, left the worship midway and ran without partaking in the prasād.

Lord Satyanarayan was displeased by this disregard for the ritual and, in His divine play, made her husband and the boat disappear into the sea.

When Kalāvatī reached the shore and could not find her husband, she fell to the ground in sorrow and began weeping bitterly. Her father, seeing her in such despair and the boat missing, folded his hands and prayed:

“O Lord! If any mistake has been made by me or my family unknowingly, please forgive us.”

A divine voice (ākāśvānī) echoed:

“O merchant! Your daughter disrespected the worship by leaving without taking the prasād. That is why her husband vanished. If she returns home, consumes the prasād, and then comes back, her husband will be restored to her.”

Hearing this message, Kalāvatī hurried home, respectfully consumed the sacred prasād, and returned to the shore. Instantly, her husband reappeared safe and sound, and the two embraced joyfully.

Filled with gratitude and devotion, the entire family worshipped Lord Satyanarayan with proper rituals and offerings. The merchant, having experienced the Lord’s divine grace, lived a prosperous life and, in the end, attained liberation (moksha).                                                                                              ॥Thus ends Chapter Four of the Satyanarayan Vrat Katha.

Shri Satyanarayan Vrat Katha – Chapter 5

Suta Maharishi continued and said:

“O great sages! Now I shall narrate another divine story. Please listen carefully. Long ago, there was a noble and generous king named Tungadhwaj who deeply cared for the welfare of his subjects. But once, he disrespected the prasadam (holy offering) of Lord Satyanarayan and had to suffer grave consequences. One day, the king went to the forest for hunting. After hunting, he came to rest under a banyan tree. There he saw a group of cowherds performing the Satyanarayan Vrat with devotion along with their families. But the king, filled with pride, ignored the ritual and did not offer his respects to Lord Satyanarayan. When the cowherds offered him the sacred prasadam, he refused and walked away toward his city. As he entered his city, he found that his entire kingdom had been destroyed. Realizing this was due to Lord Satyanarayan's displeasure, the king was filled with regret and hurried back to the forest. There, he humbly went to the cowherds and participated in the puja (worship). He respectfully accepted the prasadam. With this sincere devotion, the king regained everything he had lost, ruled prosperously for many years, and eventually attained moksha (liberation).

The Power and Benefits of Satyanarayan Vrat

Anyone who sincerely performs this sacred and rare Satyanarayan Vrat with full faith will never lack wealth or food. The poor become rich, prisoners are freed, the childless are blessed with children, and all desires are fulfilled. Ultimately, the soul reaches Vaikuntha, the divine abode of Lord Vishnu.

Now listen to what happened to those who had performed this vrat in their previous lives — their future births were blessed:

  • The old Brahmin Shatananda was reborn as Sudama, the childhood friend of Lord Krishna, and through devotion attained Vaikuntha.
  • King Ulkamukh was reborn as King Dasharatha, the father of Lord Rama, and through devotion to Lord Ranganatha, he attained liberation.
  • The merchant Sadhu was reborn as the righteous King Moradhwaj, who even offered his son in sacrifice, and thus reached Vaikuntha.
  • King Tungadhwaj was reborn as Swayambhuva Manu, who guided countless souls toward the path of devotion and attained Vaikuntha.
  • The poor woodcutter was reborn as King Guha, the Nishada, who served Lord Rama with love and devotion and was liberated from the cycle of birth and death.

॥ Thus ends the Fifth Chapter of the Shri Satyanarayan Vrat Katha ॥

Styanarayan Katha pooja vidhi -

Shri Satyanarayan Puja is a simple and sacred ritual dedicated to Lord Vishnu in His truthful form. It begins with a vow (sankalp), followed by Kalash Sthapana and invocation of the deity. The Lord is worshipped with 16 traditional offerings (shodashopachar) including water, seat, clothes, sandal paste, flowers, incense, lamp, and food. After the ritual, the five-chapter story of Lord Satyanarayan is read or heard, highlighting the power of truth, devotion, and dharma. The puja concludes with an aarti and distribution of prasad.
